Tragedy struck on Thursday as an Air India aircraft carrying up to 242 passengers crash-landed in a fireball near Ahmedabad Airport, sparking panic and a large-scale emergency response. The aircraft was reportedly bound for Birmingham, United Kingdo,, when the incident occurred during take-off.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of horror as plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky following a loud explosion. “There was a deafening sound and then we saw the aircraft engulfed in flames. Emergency crews rushed in almost immediately,” said Ravi Patel, a resident who was near the airport at the time of the crash.
Local media reports suggest the plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Air India, failed to gain adequate lift and skidded off the runway before catching fire. Footage from the scene showed firefighters battling to contain the blaze while medics attended to injured passengers. However, there has been no official confirmation yet on casualties or fatalities.
Air India, in a preliminary statement, said it was working with authorities to assess the full scope of the accident. “We are aware of the incident involving Flight AI-171 scheduled for Birmingham and are cooperating fully with aviation authorities. Emergency protocols were activated immediately. Passenger safety remains our top priority,” a spokesperson for the airline said.
An aviation official who spoke to GMTNewsng on condition of anonymity stated, “The aircraft was cleared for take-off. What happened next is under active investigation, but all indications point to a critical failure during acceleration on the runway.” Aviation authorities and India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are expected to launch a formal inquiry into the crash.
International flights from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport were temporarily suspended as rescue operations continued. Flights to and from the airport are being re-routed, and passengers have been advised to contact their airlines for updates. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has acknowledged the incident and says it is monitoring the situation closely.
This latest Air India crash raises urgent questions about aircraft maintenance, pilot training, and air safety protocols in India’s booming aviation sector. As the world awaits further updates, thoughts remain with the passengers and crew of Flight AI-171 and their families. GMTNewsng
