In a landmark move for Enugu State’s infrastructure, Governor Peter Mbah will flag off the dualization of the vital Abakpa-Ugwogo-Opi Nsukka road on Monday, October 28, 2024. The project represents a significant step toward realizing the governor’s vision for a more connected and economically viable state. This dualization is expected to reduce travel times, boost trade, and open new economic opportunities across Enugu’s northern corridor, a core component of Mbah’s “Tomorrow is Here” agenda.
For years, the Abakpa-Ugwogo-Opi road has served as a critical link between Enugu’s urban center and the northern regions. Yet congestion, poor maintenance, and frequent delays have burdened travelers and residents alike. Governor Mbah, who prioritized this road early in his tenure, noted, “The dualization of this road is a commitment to the people of Enugu. A source from Government House, who pleaded anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press, made known exclusively to GMTNewsng reporter Ferdinand Agu, this morning, that this project has been fast-tracked as part of Governor Mbah’s priority agenda for state development.
Support for the governor’s infrastructure drive has been widespread. Chief Chinedu Nnamede, a property owner at media estate along the Ugwogo corridor, praised the initiative, saying, “This project will increase property values, attract businesses, and improve the daily lives of people in the area. Governor Mbah’s vision is transformative, and we’re excited to see this happen.”
Beyond the Abakpa-Ugwogo-Opi project, the governor has also launched a comprehensive plan to revitalize roads across the state. Another key undertaking is the long-neglected Mgbuji-Eha Amufu road, a critical rural connection that will ease travel and improve access to resources for thousands of residents. Similar projects are underway in other parts of the state, further supporting the governor’s goal of expanding Enugu’s infrastructure to stimulate economic growth and regional access.
The governor’s emphasis on “disruptive innovation” is also evident in his approach to these developments. By tackling road and facility construction through innovative, large-scale initiatives, Mbah’s administration aims to address long-standing needs with sustainable solutions. Professor Ifeanyi Nwakobi, an economist resident in Nsukka, commented, “Governor Mbah’s focus on disruptive innovation is changing how Enugu addresses infrastructure. These projects aren’t just temporary fixes; they’re building the foundation for long-term prosperity.”
Governor Mbah’s commitment extends beyond roads to the long-abandoned Enugu International Conference Centre and the Presidential Hotel, both of which are now receiving expedited attention. Once operational, these facilities will generate revenue, support tourism, and create thousands of jobs, offering a much-needed boost to the state’s economy and addressing high unemployment rates among Enugu’s youth. Hon. Princess Ugwu, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, expressed optimism, saying, “These projects are breathing life back into Enugu. We’re on the way to becoming an economic and tourism hub, and our youth will finally have access to sustainable jobs.”
Residents and businesses alike have welcomed the administration’s infrastructure priorities. Mrs. Uchenna Edeh, a logistics operator in Abakpa, remarked, “Improved roads mean faster deliveries and less vehicle damage, which is a huge benefit for businesses like mine. Governor Mbah is not just talking about progress; he’s making it happen.”
As the state anticipates the October 28 launch, Chief Chinedu Nnamede captured the optimism of many Enugu residents: “This is more than just a road project; it’s a vision realized. Governor Mbah has shown us that tomorrow truly is here.”
