Michigan, USA – In the vibrant city of Detroit, Michigan, the Igbo community is hosting its eagerly anticipated Igbo Day and the inaugural New Yam Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2024, this event promises to be a celebration of cultural heritage and gastronomy.

The festival will showcase a variety of attractions, including “authentic Igbo cuisines, masquerades, cultural music, and a cultural competition,” as highlighted by Gabriel Ugwu, the president of the Igbo Cultural Festival of Michigan (ICAM). These elements are designed to immerse attendees in the rich traditions and practices of the Igbo people, offering a true taste of their culture.

This year’s festival is proudly sponsored by Mabel Hotel in Asaba, the administrative center of Nigeria’s Delta State. The sponsorship reflects a commitment to promoting and preserving cultural heritage across borders. The festivities will take place at the northwestern campus of Wayne County Community College in West Detroit, providing a central and accessible location for participants.

Gabriel Ugwu expressed his excitement about the event’s special guest, stating, “We are lucky to have as our special guest Professor Bart Nnaji, the chairman of the Geometric Power group and former Minister of Power.” Nnaji’s presence is expected to add significant prestige and draw attention to the event’s importance.

Professor Bart Nnaji’s illustrious career is marked by his service as the Minister of Science and Technology and his recognition as a Distinguished Professor of Industrial Engineering in the United States. This achievement is particularly notable as he is the first Black person to receive such an honor in American history, underscoring his impact and influence in the field.

Nnaji’s return to Nigeria in 2004 was spurred by an invitation from prominent global leaders, including James Wolfensohn, the then President of the World Bank, and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who was then the Minister of Finance and is now the Director General of the World Trade Organization. They envisioned him leading the Aba Independent Power Project to transform Aba into a hub of indigenous technology and economic vitality.

Sources within Geometric Power divulged that Nnaji’s acceptance of the invitation was greatly influenced by Detroit’s rich industrial heritage. “Detroit is synonymous with industrial engineering, his core area of expertise,” noted the insider, emphasizing the city’s historic ties to leading auto manufacturers like General Motors, Ford Motors, and Stellantis.

This industrial backdrop resonates with Nnaji’s professional focus and personal interests. His admiration for Steve Jobs, the co-founder and chairman of Apple Corporation, is particularly significant. Nnaji appreciates how Jobs’ integration of art with technology has been seminal in setting a new standard for innovation and design.

Steve Jobs’ engagement with the arts, such as his study of calligraphy at Reed College in Oregon, profoundly influenced Apple’s product design. The unique aesthetics of Apple’s first computer in the late 1980s, resulting from this artistic influence, gave Macintosh a distinctive edge in the competitive tech market.

Moreover, Jobs’ passion for music led to the development of iTunes, revolutionizing both technology and the music industry on a global scale. This blending of art and technology exemplifies the principle that inspires Nnaji, aligning with his vision for the festival.

Nnaji is intrigued by this synergy and sees it as a blueprint for the integration of culture with modern technology. The organizers of the Igbo New Yam Festival in Michigan are keen to showcase how this fusion can benefit both Nigerian communities in the U.S. and those back home.

Gabriel Ugwu hopes that the 2024 ICAM will impart a vital lesson, emphasizing, “One important lesson Nigerians need to learn from the 2024 ICAM is that culture, technology, and entrepreneurship must go together.” Through this festival, Ugwu aspires to inspire a new generation to embrace this holistic approach to achieving progress and innovation.

Ultimately, the event aims to celebrate the richness of Igbo culture while encouraging technological and entrepreneurial advancement, creating a dynamic platform where tradition and innovation coexist harmoniously. GMTNewsng
