The Cross River State Government is targeting more than ₦19 billion in economic benefits from the 2026 Carnival Calabar as it expands digital participation, attracts tourists and creates opportunities for businesses and young creatives.

The Cross River State Government has set a target of generating more than ₦19 billion in economic benefits from the 2026 Carnival Calabar as it seeks to strengthen tourism, attract investment and expand business opportunities across the state.

Governor Bassey Otu announced the target on Sunday during the flag-off of the carnival’s first dry run in Calabar. He was represented by Deputy Governor Peter Odey.

Otu said the government was repositioning the annual festival as a major economic asset capable of attracting local and international tourists, supporting businesses and showcasing Cross River’s cultural heritage.

The Chairman of the Cross River State Carnival Commission, Gab Onah, said the 2025 edition recorded an estimated ₦19 billion in socioeconomic impact.

He explained that the commission was developing strategies to surpass that figure in 2026, with greater public participation and digital innovation expected to contribute to the festival’s growth.

The ₦19 billion target refers to projected economic benefits rather than confirmed revenue accruing directly to the state government.

Onah identified digitalisation as one of the strategies being introduced to broaden participation in the festival.

He said the commission had introduced online registration and voting, allowing members of the public to register as carnival band members and vote for the Band of the Year.

The initiative is expected to give spectators a more active role in the festival while expanding engagement beyond physical attendance in Calabar.

Onah also disclosed that Nigerian music star Davido had indicated his readiness to participate in the 2026 festivities.

He added that discussions with some international participants were ongoing as organisers worked to strengthen the carnival’s appeal to wider audiences.

The 2026 Carnival Calabar is themed “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny.”

According to Onah, the theme promotes unity, inclusiveness and shared humanity, while encouraging people to recognise their common interests despite their differences.

He said the festival would also provide young people with opportunities to showcase their creativity and talents through performances and other carnival activities.

Beyond entertainment, the commission aims to increase the festival’s contribution to tourism and commercial activity by attracting visitors and creating opportunities for local businesses.

The government’s ambition to surpass the previous edition’s estimated economic impact places renewed emphasis on participation, investment and the carnival’s capacity to generate measurable benefits for Cross River State.

As preparations continue, the commission is seeking to strengthen Carnival Calabar’s position as a major cultural attraction while expanding its economic contribution to the state.
