Enugu Police have ordered an investigation into an alleged shooting outside the NDC secretariat that injured a man, while joint security operatives dispersed party members involved in a fight at the airport entrance.
The Enugu State Police Command has ordered a thorough investigation into an alleged shooting outside the secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), as joint security operatives intervened to disperse party members involved in a fight at the entrance to Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
The incidents occurred on Saturday, October 10, 2026, according to a press release issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe.
The police said the alleged shooting occurred at about 2:30 p.m. in front of the NDC secretariat in Enugu, where unidentified armed hoodlums reportedly shot a man who was repairing a vehicle parked along the road.
The incident allegedly left the victim with a suspected gunshot injury and damaged the windscreens of five parked vehicles.
According to the statement, police operatives responded to a distress report, restored normalcy at the scene and rushed the injured man to a hospital for treatment. The victim is reportedly in stable condition.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators and ensure their arrest.
In a separate incident on the same day, joint police and military operatives dispersed suspected NDC members who had gathered in a disorderly manner at the entrance to Akanu Ibiam International Airport at about 11:30 a.m.
Preliminary police findings indicated that airport authorities had restricted the number of party members permitted to enter the airport to receive their governorship candidate.
The restriction reportedly led to a misunderstanding among the party members, which escalated into a fight and prompted the intervention of the joint security team.
The police did not identify those allegedly responsible for the shooting or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the airport altercation.
Reacting to the incidents, Giwa urged political parties and their supporters to shun violence and conduct their activities in accordance with the law and existing peace accords.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to providing a level playing field for all political parties in the state.
The commissioner also advised political parties to notify the police ahead of planned activities to enable the Command to make adequate security arrangements and prevent a breakdown of law and order.
