Enugu State Government has suspended traditional ruler Williams Ezugwu of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla over alleged misconduct and failure to comply with community regulations.
The Enugu State Government has suspended the Traditional Ruler of Ibagwa Opi Ogbozalla Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Williams Ezugwu, over alleged misconduct.
The Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr Charles Egumgbe, announced the suspension in a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday by the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Emeka Nebeife.
According to the statement, the suspension took effect immediately and followed what the government described as persistent conduct inconsistent with provisions of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State.
The government alleged that Ezugwu failed to subscribe to the Code of Conduct of the community and had not constituted a cabinet to assist in administering the affairs of the autonomous community since its creation.
He was also accused of failing to establish a town union executive, resulting in what the government described as the unilateral administration of the community.
Egumgbe said the alleged actions could create conditions capable of plunging the community into an avoidable crisis, prompting the government to suspend the traditional ruler.
The latest action is part of a series of disciplinary measures taken by the Enugu State Government against traditional and community leaders in recent months.
In July, the government suspended three traditional rulers and four President-Generals from communities in Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct bordering on security infractions. The suspensions were made pursuant to the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State, 2024, and the Town Union Registration and Administration Law, 2025.
Also in July, the government suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community in Enugu South Local Government Area, Igwe Christopher Nyia, over an alleged communal crisis. An administrative panel was subsequently constituted to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crisis.
The state government has maintained that such measures are intended to protect peace, order and effective administration within autonomous communities.
