The University of East London has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree on Governor Peter Mbah, celebrating his leadership, academic record, entrepreneurship and commitment to education and public service.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has been conferred with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree by his alma mater, the University of East London (UEL), in the United Kingdom.
The honorary degree was conferred on Mbah on Thursday during the university’s September 2026 graduation ceremony at its Docklands Campus in London.
UEL’s graduation programme confirms that the Royal Docks School of Business and Law held its undergraduate and postgraduate ceremonies on Thursday, September 10, with honorary awards forming part of the graduation proceedings.
Presenting Mbah’s citation, the Vice-Provost (Business) and Executive Dean of the Royal Docks School of Business and Law, Prof. Fatima Ana-Diab, recalled his academic achievements and leadership record as a student, entrepreneur and public servant.
According to the citation, Mbah demonstrated leadership qualities during his time at UEL, where he served as President of the Students’ Law Society.
Under his leadership, the society was recognised as the University’s Most Productive Society of the Year.
He also represented students on the Students’ Representative Council and School of Law Board, won UEL’s Mooting Competition and represented the university at the International Negotiation Competition.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2000, Mbah returned to Nigeria, attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar.
His official biography records that he subsequently obtained a Master’s degree in Maritime and Commercial Law from Lagos State University, an MBA from IESE Business School, University of Navarra, Spain, and completed executive and postgraduate programmes at Lagos Business School and the University of Oxford.
Mbah went on to build a career spanning law, entrepreneurship and public service, including the founding of Pinnacle Oil and Gas.
Before becoming governor, he also served Enugu State as Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development.
“In May 2023, Peter Mbah took office as Governor of Enugu State, bringing his experience across law, business and public administration to the leadership of millions of people,” Ana-Diab said.
The university particularly highlighted Mbah’s commitment to education and skills development, noting that his administration had invested significantly in programmes designed to equip young people for a changing global economy.
UEL said Mbah’s journey from a law student to a lawyer, entrepreneur and governor demonstrated the possibilities education could unlock and the responsibility that came with using opportunities to create change for others.
“His commitment to development extends beyond education. Through public service, business and philanthropy, Peter has championed investment, innovation, infrastructure, healthcare and community development,” the citation stated.
The university added that Mbah’s record offered graduates an example of how education, knowledge and leadership could be deployed to create wider social and economic impact.
In his acceptance speech, Mbah reiterated his belief in disruptive innovation, education, service and the importance of dreaming beyond one’s inherited circumstances.
“One quality has always mattered to me: the willingness to disrupt. I have never been particularly interested in accepting the limits of my inherited circumstances.
“But imagination is not enough. There must be purpose. For me, that purpose is service, because there will always be mornings when ambition alone will not get you out of bed; and moments when the road becomes difficult and the rewards seem far away.
“At those moments, it matters to have something that transcends self,” he said.
The governor described education as a critical tool for expanding opportunities and transforming society.
“Education enlarges our capacity to transform the world. I believe that deeply. What we are given must somehow enlarge the possibilities available to others.
“That is why, today, we invest 33 percent of our state budget in education. We are building schools, tech hubs and opportunities for young people to participate in an economy that is increasingly driven by knowledge, innovation and technology,” Mbah stated.
The Enugu State Government has identified education as a major pillar of its development agenda, including the construction of Smart Green Schools and broader investments in technology and human capital development. The administration’s recently unveiled achievements compendium lists more than 7,000 classrooms among its education interventions.
Mbah thanked the University of East London for the honour and acknowledged the institution’s contributions to his academic and professional journey.
The award adds to previous recognition received by the governor, whose career has spanned legal practice, business, public administration and political leadership.
