In a statement issued on August 24, 2026, President Tinubu described the Sultan as a remarkable leader whose seven decades of life have been defined by service, wisdom and humility.
Tinubu extended his congratulations to the Sultan on behalf of himself, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Federal Government of Nigeria, while commending his nearly two decades of leadership on the throne of his forebears.
According to the President, Sultan Abubakar has embodied the values of the Sokoto Caliphate, particularly scholarship, humility and an unwavering commitment to peace.
He described the monarch as a “stabilising voice” during periods of national turbulence and praised his efforts to build bridges across religious and community divides.
Tinubu said the Sultan’s leadership has helped promote education, interfaith dialogue and humanitarian service, while highlighting his advocacy for peaceful coexistence, the girl-child and the dignity of every Nigerian.
“At 70, you remain a towering figure of conscience and counsel,” the President said, describing the Sultan’s palace in Sokoto as a centre for dialogue whose words continue to carry significant weight across the country.
The President also acknowledged the Sultan’s contribution to national development, particularly in the areas of security, community development and the spiritual well-being of Nigerians.
“As President, I deeply value your partnership in nation-building,” Tinubu said, adding that Nigeria needs more of the wisdom and counsel the Sultan has continued to offer.
Tinubu prayed that Allah would grant the Sultan many more years in good health, sound mind and strength to continue serving his family, the Sokoto Caliphate and Nigeria.
He also expressed hope that the Sultan’s reign would remain a source of blessing, guidance and honour to the country.
“Your Eminence, congratulations once again. May this new decade of your life be your most rewarding yet,” the President said.
