Rescue operations by Nigeria’s security agencies freed 308 abducted citizens from the Kainji Lake National Park Forest, prompting President Bola Tinubu to commend the joint operation and direct stronger early warning and intelligence systems nationwide.
ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed the successful rescue of 308 abducted Nigerians from Kwara and Niger states, describing the operation as a major breakthrough in the country’s fight against kidnapping and insecurity.
The President praised the coordinated efforts of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC), the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force, whose intelligence-led operation secured the victims’ release.
According to the Presidency, 163 of the rescued victims were abducted from Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, while 145 others were rescued from Niger State.
The victims were freed from the Kainji Lake National Park Forest in New Bussa Local Government Area of Niger State during what the government described as the largest same-day rescue operation ever carried out by the joint security team.
President Tinubu commended the leadership and personnel of the participating security agencies for their bravery, professionalism and effective inter-agency collaboration.
“The successful execution of this intelligence-led operation demonstrates the growing efficiency and collaboration among our security services. I commend our gallant men and women in uniform for their bravery and unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives,” the President said.
The Presidency disclosed that the rescued citizens are currently receiving first aid and other essential medical treatment at the medical facility in Wawa Cantonment.
It added that after completing medical evaluations, the victims will be handed over to their respective state governments for rehabilitation, care and reunification with their families.
While celebrating the successful operation, Tinubu directed security agencies to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He specifically ordered the immediate enhancement of early warning systems, improved community-based intelligence gathering and stronger rapid response mechanisms across the country.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eliminating security threats, protecting vulnerable communities and restoring lasting peace in every part of Nigeria.
