Promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks has been approved by the Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja.

The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial ranks across various disciplines.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Mr. Habib Yakoob.

According to Yakoob, 17 senior academics were promoted to the rank of Professor, while another 17 were elevated to the position of Associate Professor.

He explained that the promotions were ratified during the Governing Council’s regular meeting held on July 10 and 11, 2026, following favourable external assessments of the candidates’ scholarly publications.

The beneficiaries are drawn from several academic fields, including community medicine, veterinary medicine, engineering, religious studies, guidance and counselling, accounting, library and information science, business administration, physics, parasitology and entomology, physiology, crop science, educational foundations, and banking and finance. Yakoob added that the promotions take effect from October 2025.

Congratulating the newly promoted academics, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, described the promotions as recognition of their commitment to scholarship, research and academic excellence.

He said the university remains committed to strengthening its internal processes to ensure the timely consideration of external assessment reports and the promotion of deserving academic staff in line with established guidelines.

“These promotions are not just about attaining a higher rank. They reflect our belief that hard work and dedication should be recognised and rewarded.

“I congratulate all those promoted and encourage them to see this as a call to even greater service to the university, their profession and society,” Fawehinmi said.
