Corporate and academic circles honor the memory of West Africa’s pioneer marketing professor, late Julius Onah, whose “Gown to Town” model bridges ivory tower insights with local SME ecosystems.
In commemoration of its annual Founders’ Day, management consulting and corporate development firm Manmark Associates Limited hosted a retrospective event honoring its late founder, Professor Julius Onuorah Onah (1939–2015). Recognized historically as the first Professor of Marketing in West Africa and the pioneer Vice-Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Onah’s legacy remains a core reference blueprint for modern industrial linkage frameworks within the West African corporate landscape.
The tribute, framed around what would have been his 87th birthday, focused significantly on his foundational academic philosophy – popularly termed taking the “Gown to Town” – which advocates for the systematic translation of high-level university research into practical, market-driven economic solutions for sub-national businesses and small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs).
Professor Onah’s career was defined by an elite series of institutional milestones that shaped the trajectory of business education across regional lines. A proud native of Orba in the Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, his academic roadmap spanned local excellence and international specialized scholarship.
Beyond elite ivory-tower administration, Onah’s major contribution to national economic modeling was his pioneering research into empirical boundaries defining small-scale industries. Rather than relying heavily on copy-pasted Western parameters, he designed metrics based on local capital structures, workforce absorption, and regional economic indicators.
“Prof. Julius Onah was an academic with a distinct difference. He single-handedly shifted the paradigm of university business education from passive textbook memorization into active field execution, ensuring that local small businesses could tap into premium institutional insights to scale their corporate longevity.” – Adewumi Osho, Business Development Lead, Manmark Associates
“On this Founders’ Day, the management and staff of Manmark Associates Limited reaffirm their commitment to preserving his vision and building on the solid foundation he laid. His standards remain our benchmark for excellence as Manmark continues to expand its impact across the globe.”
“Happy posthumous birthday to our founding father, teacher and guide. Your vision lives on, your legacy continues to thrive, and Manmark keeps breaking new frontiers in your honour,” Osho said.
