The Enugu State Government has greenlit 151.55 kilometers of rural road construction and confirmed advanced preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival and regional tourism.

The Enugu State Government has approved the construction of 151.55 kilometers of rural roads alongside extensive upgrades to sports and tourism facilities following a State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House on Monday.

The large-scale project aligns with the administration’s broader target of delivering 10,000 kilometers of roads to improve connectivity and expand economic activities across rural communities. The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Benjamin Okoh, explained that while previous phases concentrated on urban centers-where over 95 per cent completion has been recorded-the focus has now shifted entirely to opening up the rural corridors.

Among the specific routes approved is the 52.2-kilometer Nsukka–Lejja–Aku–Akpakwume–Eke–Ebe road, which forms part of a 70-kilometer infrastructure push within the Enugu North Senatorial District. Other approved projects include the 10.1-kilometer Ezeagu–Umumba–Oye–Ebenebe road, the 14.5-kilometer Enugu–United Palm Plantation access road at Ibite-Olo, and the 3.6-kilometer Umuabi–Umuaga Link Road. The expansion also covers the 18.23-kilometer Eke–Obinagu–Obodo Nike–Umu Ode–Oruku–Aguikpa–Amechi Idodo Road, with the commissioner noting that more than 2,000 kilometers of rural roads are captured within the state’s 2026 fiscal budget.

In the sports and youth development sector, the state has confirmed that the Enugu City International Marathon will take place on August 30, 2026, ahead of the National Sports Festival scheduled to commence on November 27, 2026.

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Lloyd Ekweremadu, announced that the renovation, refurbishment, and modernization of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium are currently being executed by the China Communications Construction Company. The state is currently evaluated at 85 to 90 per cent readiness regarding accommodation facilities to host the 8,000 athletes and officials expected for the national games.

Parallel to the road and sports initiatives, the state is investing heavily in its tourism sector to attract up to 3 million visitors annually. The Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke, stated that the council approved dedicated access roads to premier tourist destinations including the Ngwo Pine Forest, the Nsude Pyramid, and the Awhum Waterfall.

These access roads will complement ongoing recreational installations such as a new canopy walkway, a zip line, and the Cross of Hope at Okpatu, forming an integrated development strategy to position the state as a prime hub for hospitality, sports, and commercial investment.
