In a toxic turn of events, former Governor Peter Obi has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a stifling political environment and deep-rooted internal instability.
ABUJA – Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has officially announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The high-profile exit, confirmed on Sunday in Abuja, comes as a major blow to the party’s stability.
In a statement released via his media aide, Valentine Obienyem, Obi characterized the current Nigerian political landscape as increasingly toxic. He pointed toward a climate of intimidation, rising insecurity, and relentless scrutiny targeting public servants who prioritize sincere leadership over political maneuvering.
Obi lamented that the very institutions designed to safeguard citizens have become tools of oppression, creating an environment where genuine reform is met with both public and private pressure.
Despite his sudden departure, Obi clarified that his decision was not rooted in personal animosity toward party leadership. He maintained his respect for ADC Chairman Senator David Mark and elder statesman Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Instead, he pointed to a toxic combination of persistent internal divisions, legal disputes, and external interference from destabilizing forces. He noted that these challenges represent a repeat of the systemic crises that previously led to his exit from the Labour Party in February 2026.
Obi expressed deep concern that integrity and due process are now viewed as weaknesses in the Nigerian political theater. He noted that nation-building efforts are frequently sabotaged by exclusion and a hunger for control rather than a desire for progress.
While reaffirming his commitment to the welfare of the people, Obi stated that his primary objectives remain poverty alleviation and national security rather than the mere pursuit of political office.
