Four journalists were injured and three persons killed in a fatal auto crash at Ugwu Onyeama axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, with eyewitnesses urging speedy completion of the highway reconstruction.

Four journalists sustained varying degrees of injuries while three persons lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident that occurred on Saturday morning in Enugu.

The crash happened at the Ugwu Onyeama Hills axis of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway and involved multiple vehicles, including a black Toyota Sienna bus conveying journalists to an official assignment in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area.

Some occupants of the bus, including crew members from the African Independent Television and the Nigerian Television Authority, sustained injuries and were evacuated for medical attention.

The identities of the deceased were yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and the police were seen at the scene carrying out rescue operations and managing traffic along the busy highway.

Eyewitnesses described the Onyeama Hills stretch as a high-risk zone due to its steep terrain and frequent accidents, calling on government to expedite the completion of the ongoing reconstruction of the second lane of the expressway.

Some of them noted that the delay in completing the dualisation project had continued to expose motorists to danger, especially at the hilly section, and urged urgent intervention to prevent further loss of lives.

Reacting to the incident, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, Obinna Ogbuka, sympathised with the injured journalists and thanked God for sparing their lives.

Ogbuka expressed dissatisfaction over repeated accidents at the Ugwu Onyeama axis and called for speedy completion of the ongoing reconstruction work on the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway to reduce such incidents.
