Zamfara Assembly Speaker Bilyaminu Moriki and 12 lawmakers defect from PDP to APC, giving the ruling party full control of the state legislature.
The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Moriki, alongside 12 lawmakers, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Moriki announced the lawmakers’ defection during plenary in Gusau on Monday after presenting letters of resignation to the House.
The development followed the earlier defection of Governor Dauda Lawal from the PDP to the APC.
The APC National Secretariat has scheduled Tuesday, March 24, for the formal reception of the governor into the party. The event is expected to be attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, members of the party’s national leadership, and former governors of the state.
The defecting lawmakers are also expected to be formally received alongside the governor.
Those who joined the APC include Deputy Speaker Adamu Aliyu, Majority Leader Bello Mazawaje, and Chief Whip Rilwanu Nagambo, among others.
Moriki said the unanimous decision was taken to support Governor Lawal’s move and enhance development in the state.
“It became necessary for all of us to support Gov. Dauda Lawal to bring more development to the state. We received full support from our constituencies before taking the decision,” he said.
He added that the move was also aimed at encouraging smooth collaboration between the state and the federal governments.
With the development, the APC now controls all 24 seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly.
