President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former President Olusegun Obasanjo on his 89th birthday, celebrating his enduring influence on Nigeria, Africa, and the international community.

Obasanjo turned 89 on March 5.

In a congratulatory message, Tinubu described the former leader as an elder statesman whose contributions to national development and continental progress remain significant.

The president highlighted Obasanjo’s historic roles in Nigeria’s political evolution, noting that he first served as military Head of State from 1976 to 1979 before handing over power to a civilian administration.

Obasanjo later returned to power as Nigeria’s democratically elected president, serving from 1999 to 2007 at the beginning of the country’s Fourth Republic.

Tinubu also acknowledged the former president’s role during the Nigerian Civil War, where he led troops in defence of Nigeria’s unity.

He further recalled Obasanjo’s imprisonment during the military era after speaking out against authoritarian rule, describing the experience as evidence of his commitment to democratic values.

According to the president, Obasanjo’s continued engagement in national and continental affairs through books, public commentary, and diplomatic initiatives reflects his enduring dedication to nation-building and Africa’s development.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health, strength, and wisdom for the former leader as he continues to contribute to national and global affairs.
