ENUGU, Nigeria. Feb. 28, 2026 – Power supply drop in Enugu and across the South-East deepens as EEDC attributes disruption to inadequate gas supply to thermal stations. Load shedding ongoing to maintain grid stability.
Power supply drop has affected customers of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) following what the utility firm described as inadequate gas supply to thermal generating stations, a development that has sharply reduced electricity allocation to its network.
In a statement issued on February 27, 2026, the company explained that the decline in power availability was directly linked to constraints in gas supply to power plants, which form a significant part of Nigeria’s electricity generation mix. The shortfall has, in turn, reduced the energy distributed to EEDC, impacting customers across its franchise areas in the South-East.
According to the company, the drop in generation has necessitated load shedding across the national grid to preserve stability and prevent system disturbances. The measure, implemented by the Independent System Operator (ISO), is aimed at balancing supply with available generation capacity while avoiding widespread grid collapse.
EEDC’s Group Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, acknowledged the inconvenience caused to households, businesses, and institutions, stressing that the company is in active engagement with relevant stakeholders to address the situation. He expressed optimism that once gas supply constraints ease and generation improves, power supply to customers will gradually stabilise.

The power supply drop comes at a time when many residents and businesses in Enugu and neighbouring states are grappling with rising operational costs, making electricity reliability critical for economic activities. Energy analysts note that Nigeria’s heavy reliance on gas-fired thermal stations makes the grid vulnerable to disruptions in gas production, pipeline vandalism, and supply chain bottlenecks.
While apologising to its customers, EEDC urged continued patience and understanding as efforts intensify to resolve the generation challenges. The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining grid stability within its operational capacity and keeping customers informed of further developments.
