The Priest-in-Residence of Holy Family Catholic Church, Fr. Theophilus Nwodo, has urged Nigerian leaders to use the Lenten season as a period of national reflection ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Nwodo made the call in his Ash Wednesday message delivered in Enugu, as Christians worldwide commenced the 40-day Lenten observance.

He tasked political leaders and aspirants to embrace humility, justice and sincerity, stressing that leadership should reflect the values exemplified by Jesus Christ.

According to the cleric, Christ remains the ideal model of leadership, embodying sacrifice, truth and compassion.

“If our leaders emulate Christ, we will not hear about electoral malpractice or manipulation. Leaders should avoid false means to gain power.

“When God chooses a leader, He prepares and guides the person,” he said.

The priest further emphasised that campaign promises must translate into tangible governance outcomes, noting that integrity should define public service.

“It is not enough to shout during campaigns and make promises. When elected, leaders should put their manifestos into practice. God stands for truth, justice and love,” he added.

Beyond political leadership, Nwodo called on Nigerians to foster unity, collaboration and genuine concern for one another, stating that sustainable national development requires collective commitment.

He encouraged citizens to remain prayerful and hopeful, expressing confidence that adherence to justice, mercy and ethical leadership would position Nigeria as a positive example for future generations.

Explaining the spiritual significance of Lent, the cleric described the season as a time of repentance, renewal and self-examination for Christians.

He said Ash Wednesday serves as a solemn reminder of human mortality and humility before God.

“Ash Wednesday reminds us that we are dust and unto dust we shall return. The ash signifies humility and simplicity of heart. When you humble yourself, God will exalt you,” he said.

Nwodo urged Christians to reflect on their actions, seek forgiveness and commit to building a more just and compassionate society.

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting and repentance leading up to Easter in the Christian calendar.
