The Enugu Sujimoto recovery has climbed to ₦1.28 billion following additional recoveries by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from Mr. Olasijibomi Ogundele, Chief Executive Officer of Sujimoto Luxury Construction Ltd., over funds linked to the Smart Green Schools project in Enugu State. This development expands on an earlier breaking news report by GMTNewsng, which first disclosed the ₦1.27 billion recovery handed over at the EFCC South East Zonal Director’s office in Enugu.

The recovered sum, made up of bank drafts and cheques, was formally handed over to the Enugu State Government on Wednesday at the EFCC Enugu Zonal Office. The funds represent payments earlier made to the contractor for projects alleged to have been abandoned or substantially unexecuted, marking a significant progression in the Enugu Sujimoto recovery process.

Presenting the cheques, the EFCC Zonal Director in Enugu, Mr. Daniel Ise, said the Enugu Sujimoto recovery followed a petition submitted by the Enugu State Government, which prompted a comprehensive investigation into the alleged diversion of public funds. He stated that the recovery aligns with the Commission’s statutory mandate to trace, recover, and restitute public monies lost through economic and financial crimes.

Ise disclosed that drafts amounting to ₦1,234,350,000, alongside an additional ₦50,000,000, were recovered, bringing the total Enugu Sujimoto recovery to ₦1,284,350,000. He stressed that the handover does not signify the conclusion of the investigation, assuring that further recoveries would be pursued where necessary.

“This does not mark the end of the case. We will examine every facet of the petition to ensure that every kobo belonging to the Enugu State Government that is unaccounted for is traced and recovered,” Ise said, adding that prosecution would follow where evidence of criminality is established.

He also cautioned contractors handling public projects to comply strictly with the Procurement Act and other extant laws, emphasizing that accountability in public contracting remains non-negotiable.

Receiving the cheques on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, commended the EFCC for its professionalism and persistence, describing the Enugu Sujimoto recovery as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to transparency, traceability, and accountability.

Prof. Onyia said the recovery aligns with the governance philosophy of Governor Peter Mbah, assuring that the recovered funds would be reinvested in infrastructure projects aimed at improving the quality of life of Enugu residents.

He further disclosed that the state government had earlier initiated legal action against the contractor and formally petitioned the EFCC to allow due process run its full course, reaffirming the government’s resolve to hold all contractors accountable for public projects.
