The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that two people died after a bitumen-laden truck reportedly suffered brake failure and slid backwards into a Mercedes-Benz at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Road.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kano Sector Command, has confirmed the death of two people following a fatal road crash at Dangi Underpass along the Kano-Zaria Road in Kano State.
The crash occurred at about 5:50 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, when an articulated truck loaded with bitumen reportedly slid backwards and collided with a Mercedes-Benz C180.
The Sector Commander, Mr Idris Lawal, disclosed the incident in a statement issued to journalists by the command’s Public Education Officer, Mr Abdullahi Labaran.
According to the statement, the vehicles involved were a truck with registration number RMG 332 XA and a Mercedes-Benz C180 with registration number ABJ 783 GB.
Lawal said four adult males were travelling in the Mercedes-Benz when the collision occurred, leaving two dead and two others injured.
“Four persons, all adult males, were in the car during the incident. Two were confirmed dead,” he said.
The sector commander attributed the crash to suspected brake failure involving the fully loaded tipper truck, which reportedly caused the driver to lose control before the vehicle slid backwards into the Mercedes-Benz.
FRSC rescue personnel and other emergency responders evacuated the victims to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths of two occupants. The surviving victims were receiving medical attention at the hospital.
Lawal expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the repose of their souls.
Following the incident, the FRSC urged motorists, transport unions, construction companies and fleet operators to prioritise routine vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable road crashes.
Lawal particularly emphasised the need for regular inspection and servicing of critical vehicle components, including braking systems and tyres.
He also advised drivers to practise defensive driving, maintain safe following distances and remain alert to changing road conditions.
The sector commander stressed that motorists must ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound and roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
“Regular vehicle maintenance, responsible driving and compliance with traffic regulations are essential to preventing avoidable road crashes and saving lives,” he said.
He further called on all road users to observe traffic regulations and adopt responsible driving habits to reduce the risk of fatal accidents on Nigerian roads.
