The Lagos State Task Force has detained a dismissed operative for alleged impersonation and extortion of motorists and traders after a viral video of his arrest at Oshodi bus-stop circulated widely.
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force) has detained a dismissed operative for alleged impersonation and extortion of motorists and traders.
Chairman of the Task Force, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Sunday in Lagos.
Akerele said the suspect was detained at Oshodi bus-stop following the circulation of a viral video of his apprehension.
The suspect, a former paramilitary operative, was dismissed several months ago over alleged misconduct that included theft, use of a fake identity card, extortion of motorists and traders, and indiscipline.
“The suspect continued to pose as a serving task force official after his dismissal,” Akerele said.
“Operatives accosted the suspect for questioning, but he allegedly rejected the invitation and resisted arrest before being apprehended through tactical coordination and minimal force.
“The suspect no longer had any affiliation with the agency.”
The Task Force boss noted that the alleged impersonation could mislead the public and undermine confidence in legitimate law enforcement activities.
“The arrest underscored the agency’s determination to prevent dismissed personnel and other unauthorised individuals from exploiting its identity and authority for unlawful purposes,” he added.
According to Akerele, the suspect will be arraigned in court on Monday after the completion of investigation.
He urged residents to verify the identities of individuals claiming to be Task Force officials and report suspicious activities through appropriate channels.
Akerele also advised journalists to verify allegations and obtain responses from relevant parties before publication to promote balanced and responsible reporting.
He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting residents and preventing the abuse of its name and authority.
