President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria Secretary-General Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, praising his leadership, counsel and commitment to justice and peaceful coexistence.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sadness over the death of Malam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN).

Baba-Ahmed died in the early hours of Tuesday, October 6, 2026, after a career spanning religious leadership, administration and national engagement. His death was also reported by Nigerian media outlets on Tuesday, with funeral prayers scheduled to take place at the National Mosque in Abuja.

In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Baba-Ahmed as an impactful leader who guided the affairs of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria with wisdom and foresight.

The President said the late SCSN secretary-general was deeply committed to unity, justice and peaceful coexistence, while recognising his contribution to the Council’s engagement on national issues.

Tinubu also recalled his longstanding association with Baba-Ahmed, particularly during the build-up to the 2011 election and in subsequent years. He specifically acknowledged the late Islamic leader’s counsel and support during his 2023 presidential campaign.

The President further highlighted Baba-Ahmed’s role in sustaining the voice of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria on matters of national importance, as well as his efforts to foster greater understanding and promote moral renewal and social justice.

Baba-Ahmed was a Nigerian Islamic scholar, legal practitioner and public intellectual who served as Secretary-General of the SCSN. The Council’s official profile identifies him as a key figure in its administration, coordination and engagement on issues affecting Nigerian Muslims and national affairs.

Following the announcement of his death, prominent Nigerians and Islamic figures also expressed condolences. Former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, described Baba-Ahmed as a dedicated servant of Islam and humanity, noting his long-standing advocacy for justice.

Tinubu extended his condolences to the President and members of the Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria, the Baba-Ahmed family, the Government and people of Kaduna State, and the wider Nigerian Muslim Ummah.

The President prayed that Almighty Allah forgive Baba-Ahmed’s shortcomings, admit him to Jannatul Firdaus and grant his family and the Muslim community the strength to bear the loss.

The death of the SCSN secretary-general marks a significant loss to the Council and the wider Muslim community, particularly given his years of involvement in Islamic leadership and national discourse.
