A tanker fire in Odukpani, Cross River State, has claimed one life after the vehicle overturned and ignited, spreading to nearby shops and affecting several vehicles.
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed one death following a tanker fire after the vehicle overturned opposite the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed the incident in a preliminary update issued on Sunday.
Eitokpah said the tanker was involved in a road traffic accident before overturning and catching fire.
According to him, the tanker driver, who was reportedly trapped in the blaze, was rescued and taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The police spokesperson said the fire spread to nearby shops and buildings, while several vehicles were also affected by the incident.
“Police officers from Odukpani Division are currently at the scene to maintain safety, secure the area and prevent further harm to members of the public,” Eitokpah said.
He added that the Fire Service had been alerted and was expected to deploy personnel and equipment to contain the blaze.
The police confirmed that one person had died as of the time of filing the report, while emergency operations continued at the scene.
The command urged residents and motorists to keep away from the affected area and allow emergency responders unhindered access to the scene.
It also advised road users to exercise extreme caution around the location as authorities worked to secure the area and assess the extent of the damage.
The police said further information would be released as verified details emerged.
