A tragic crash on the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State has claimed three lives and left 20 others injured, with the FRSC linking the accident to speeding and dangerous driving.
Three people have died and 20 others sustained injuries in a tragic crash at Tonkere town along the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun State Sector Command, confirmed that the accident occurred on Saturday, September 6, 2026.
The Osun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Sunday Adebayo, said the crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a Volkswagen Golf car.
Preliminary findings by the FRSC indicated that speeding and dangerous driving contributed to the accident.
Adebayo said a total of 23 people were involved in the crash, comprising 11 females, nine males and three children — two boys and one girl. He said the three victims who died were two females and one male, while the remaining 20 sustained varying degrees of injuries.
“Three people died. We have about 20 others who were injured in the accident,” Adebayo said.
“The accident happened due to speeding and dangerous driving.”
The casualty figures and preliminary cause of the crash were also confirmed in multiple reports published on September 6.
The sector commander said FRSC patrol teams from Ife and Ilesa were deployed to the scene to carry out rescue operations and manage the aftermath of the accident.
Reports indicate that emergency responders arrived within minutes and evacuated the injured victims for medical attention.
Adebayo appealed to motorists to exercise greater caution on the road, warning that excessive speed could increase the severity of injuries and fatalities when accidents occur.
He stressed that responsible driving remained critical to protecting lives and property.
The FRSC commander assured residents that the corps would sustain its public enlightenment campaigns and road safety initiatives across Osun State to reduce road crashes and prevent avoidable deaths.
He also urged motorists to recognise their responsibility towards other road users.
According to him, road safety is a shared responsibility, and drivers must obey traffic regulations, avoid dangerous driving and maintain safe speeds to protect themselves and others.
The accident adds to concerns over speeding and reckless driving on major highways, as the FRSC continues to intensify rescue operations, public enlightenment and enforcement efforts to reduce preventable road fatalities.
