A new Nollywood historical drama, “Properties of the Gods,” which explores the Osu caste system and the enduring problem of social exclusion in Igboland, is set for nationwide cinema release on September 4, 2026.
The producer of the film, veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Joseph Okechukwu, disclosed the release plans during a news conference in Enugu.
“Properties of the Gods” is directed by Uzodinma Okpechi and Okechukwu Oku, with the screenplay written by Patrick Nnamani.
The film is expected to use historical storytelling to challenge the practice of branding fellow human beings as inferior because of circumstances connected to historical and traditional events.
Okechukwu described the continued discrimination associated with the Osu caste system as “devilish and uncharitable,” saying the production was designed to deepen public understanding of the historical roots and consequences of the practice.
According to him, the movie would help audiences better understand the expression “accident of history” and its relevance to discussions surrounding the origins of the Osu caste system.
The filmmaker said viewers would gain a clearer understanding of the concept and the circumstances surrounding the practice by the time they completed the film.
The movie is scheduled to screen in cinemas across Nigeria, including locations in Lagos and other parts of the North, South-East, South-South and South-West. The September 4 release date is also listed by Silverbird Cinemas.
“Properties of the Gods” features an ensemble of prominent Nollywood stars, including Pete Edochie, the late Onyeka Onwenu, Enyinna Nwigwe, Maria Chike-Benjamin, Zack Orji, Hilda Dokubo, Elvina Ubru, Obi Okoli Ofia Mbaka and Jennifer Eliogu.
Okechukwu said Pete Edochie, who inspired the production, also plays a leading role in the film.
The project marks a significant return to filmmaking for Okechukwu after several years away from directing and producing feature films. The historical drama is being distributed nationwide by Nile Entertainment.
Beyond entertainment, the producer said “Properties of the Gods” was conceived as part of the wider campaign against the Osu caste system and the discrimination it has created for generations of people in parts of Igboland.
The film seeks to encourage conversations about inherited identity, tradition, social exclusion and the need for a more progressive and inclusive society.
Meanwhile, Okechukwu recently suspended plans for a grand premiere of the movie following the deaths of Onyeka Onwenu and actress Cynthia Okereke, who both featured in the production.
He said it would be inappropriate to hold an elaborate celebration while the families of deceased members of the cast were still mourning.
Instead, the producer announced plans for tribute and condolence activities in honour of the late artistes, with the September 4 release dedicated to Onyeka Onwenu.
Okechukwu said the ultimate success and impact of “Properties of the Gods” would be determined by audiences after watching the film.
With its focus on one of the most sensitive and enduring social issues in Igbo society, the movie is expected to generate fresh conversations about tradition, human dignity and the continued campaign against social exclusion.
“Properties of the Gods” opens in cinemas nationwide on September 4, 2026.
