Super Falcons suffered a painful WAFCON exit after Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the quarter-finals in Casablanca, leaving the defending champions to fight through the play-off route for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been eliminated from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after suffering a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon on Sunday, August 9, in Casablanca, Morocco.
The defeat at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium ended Nigeria’s hopes of defending the continental title and denied the 10-time African champions a direct qualification ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Cameroon made the breakthrough in the 19th minute when Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen found the net to put the Indomitable Lionesses ahead.
The goal proved decisive as Cameroon held on to their advantage for the remainder of the encounter despite sustained pressure from the Super Falcons.
Nigeria pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Cameroon’s defence remained disciplined and resilient, while goalkeeper Michaely Kyria Bihina produced important saves to preserve her side’s narrow lead.
The Super Falcons continued to press in the closing stages but could not find the breakthrough needed to force extra time.
The victory sent Cameroon into the WAFCON semi-finals and secured a direct place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. CAF had previously confirmed that the four WAFCON semi-finalists would earn Africa’s direct tickets to the expanded 32-team World Cup in Brazil.
For Nigeria, however, the World Cup dream is not over.
The Super Falcons will now have to pursue qualification through the African play-off route. FIFA has allocated CAF four direct World Cup places and two places in the intercontinental play-off tournament, which will provide another opportunity for African teams to reach Brazil 2027.
The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027, marking the first edition of the women’s tournament to be staged in South America.
Nigeria’s WAFCON campaign therefore ends in disappointment, but the Super Falcons still have a pathway to the global tournament as they seek to recover from the quarter-final setback and secure another World Cup appearance.
