Osun Police release Commissioner Mayowa Anjorin on bail following an investigation into a political procession shooting in Ilesa that left three injured.
OSOGBO, NIGERIA — The Osun State Police Command has granted bail to the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Mayowa Anjorin, following his arrest in connection with a violent shooting incident during a political procession in Ilesa.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the commissioner’s release to newsmen on Sunday afternoon.
“The commissioner has been released. He was released around 1:00 p.m. on bail,” Ojelabi stated, emphasizing that active inquiries remain underway. “The Amotekun operative arrested alongside the commissioner and the firearm recovered from him remain in police custody while investigation is ongoing.”
The arrest followed a violent altercation on Saturday when suspected armed operatives, riding in an official government vehicle, allegedly pulled up to an ongoing political rally in Ilesa and opened fire into the crowd.
According to police reports, the assailants were clad in uniforms resembling those of the Osun State Security Network Agency, popularly known as the Amotekun Corps.
The unexpected gunfire triggered immediate panic among attendees, resulting in three individuals sustaining severe gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported the victims to a nearby medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.
While the release of Commissioner Anjorin marks an initial procedural update, law enforcement authorities clarified that the investigation into the motives and actors behind the assault is far from over.
Police detectives are continuing their examination of the seized government vehicle and the firearm recovered at the scene. State security authorities reiterated their commitment to determining the level of involvement of all parties present during the attack and ensuring those responsible face full legal accountability.
