Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected across most parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) advises residents to take safety precautions against strong winds and heavy downpours.
ABUJA, Nigeria — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast three days of cloudiness, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday, urging residents to take necessary precautions against severe weather conditions.
In its weather outlook released on Wednesday, NiMet predicted patches of clouds across the northern region during Wednesday morning, with thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall expected in parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba and Adamawa states.
Later in the day, the agency said thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely over parts of Kaduna State and the entire North-East.
For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with chances of light thunderstorms over the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau and Nasarawa states in the morning, while moderate rainfall is expected across Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Nasarawa, Plateau and the FCT during the afternoon and evening.
In the southern region, cloudy skies are expected throughout Wednesday, with light rainfall forecast for parts of the South-South in the morning before moderate rainfall spreads to Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, the South-East and the South-South later in the day.
On Thursday, the agency predicted morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall over parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Adamawa, Bauchi and Gombe states, with rainfall expected to intensify across most parts of the northern region later in the day.
NiMet also forecast widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall throughout the North-Central region on Thursday, while Ondo State and the South-South are expected to experience moderate rainfall before the weather extends into the South-East later in the day.
For Friday, the agency projected morning thunderstorms with rainfall over parts of Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Taraba states, followed by moderate rainfall across the northern region during the afternoon and evening.
The North-Central region is expected to experience light rainfall over parts of Nasarawa and Benue in the morning, with moderate thunderstorms anticipated later in the day.
NiMet added that cloudy skies would prevail across southern Nigeria, with light rainfall expected over the South-South in the morning before moderate rainfall extends to parts of Ondo, Oyo, Enugu, Imo and other South-East states later in the day.
The agency warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms in affected areas and advised residents to secure loose objects to prevent damage during the storms.
It also urged the public to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms and stay away from tall trees to reduce the risk of injury from falling branches.
NiMet further advised airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from the agency to aid flight planning and ensure safe operations.
The agency encouraged Nigerians to remain updated through its regular weather forecasts and advisories as the rainy season continues.
