The Enugu State Government has inaugurated a three-member advisory panel to investigate the lingering crisis in Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community, with the committee expected to submit its findings within two weeks as part of efforts to restore lasting peace.
The Enugu State Government has inaugurated a three-member advisory panel of inquiry to investigate the lingering crisis in Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community, Enugu South Local Government Area, as part of efforts to restore peace and stability in the area.
The panel was inaugurated on Thursday by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles Egumgbe, following the approval of Governor Peter Mbah.
The committee is chaired by Mr. Venatus Odo, the immediate past Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Enugu Branch. Mrs. Helen Onyia will serve as secretary, while Prof. Christian Obeagu is the third member.
The inauguration comes two days after the state government suspended the traditional ruler of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community, HRH Igwe Christopher Nyia, over his alleged involvement in the protracted community crisis.
Speaking during the inauguration at the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs in Enugu, Egumgbe said the panel had been mandated to conduct a thorough, impartial and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crisis.
According to him, the committee is expected to identify both the immediate and underlying causes of the conflict, examine the role allegedly played by the suspended traditional ruler and any other individuals connected to the breakdown of law and order, and recommend practical measures for restoring lasting peace.
He emphasized that the assignment was strictly an advisory inquiry and not a political exercise.
“The government is not interested in witch-hunting anybody. What is important is that the panel conducts its assignment with fairness, transparency and in line with the principles of fair hearing,” Egumgbe said.
The commissioner also warned the panel members against compromising their integrity, stressing that any attempt by individuals or groups to influence the outcome of the investigation would not be tolerated.
He assured the committee of the ministry’s full support and directed it to conclude its assignment and submit its report within two weeks.
Responding on behalf of the panel, Chairman Venatus Odo expressed appreciation to the Enugu State Government for the confidence reposed in the members.
He pledged that the panel would discharge its responsibilities professionally, objectively and without fear or favour.
“We appreciate the privilege to serve the state in this capacity. By the grace of God, we will carry out this responsibility professionally and get to the root of the issues to enthrone peace in the community,” Odo said.
