Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has commemorated the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Maj.-Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi and Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, urging Nigerians to embrace unity, justice and selfless leadership.
ENUGU — Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has marked the 60th anniversary of the assassination of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Maj.-Gen. Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, and the former Military Governor of the old Western Region, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, describing their deaths as enduring symbols of courage, loyalty and national unity.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Enugu by the organisation’s Global Publicity Secretary, Dr Ezechi Chukwu, Ohanaeze said the sacrifices made by the two military officers on July 29, 1966, remain among the most compelling examples of patriotism and selfless leadership in Nigeria’s history.
The statement noted that the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Sen. Azuta Mbata, joined millions of Nigerians in honouring the memories of the two leaders.
“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide led by Sen. Azuta Mbata solemnly joins millions of patriotic Nigerians in remembering two distinguished sons of our nation whose lives were tragically cut short on July 29, 1966,” the statement said.
Aguiyi-Ironsi and his host, Fajuyi, were abducted from the Government House in Ibadan during the July 1966 counter-coup before they were later killed near Iwo, in present-day Osun State.
According to Ohanaeze, their shared fate transcended ethnic, religious and political differences, serving as a lasting reminder of duty, honour, integrity and national unity.
The organisation said Aguiyi-Ironsi devoted his life to serving Nigeria during one of the country’s most turbulent periods, while Fajuyi demonstrated exceptional courage by refusing to abandon his guest and Commander-in-Chief despite the grave danger to his own life.
Ohanaeze described Fajuyi’s decision as one of the finest examples of selfless leadership and unwavering commitment to principle in Nigeria’s history.
Quoting Sen. Mbata, the organisation urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the lives of Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi by embracing patriotism, justice, fairness and national unity.
“Their memories remind us that patriotism is measured not by words but by sacrifice.
“They stood for duty, honour and the ideal of one united Nigeria founded on justice and mutual respect.
“Their friendship and shared fate remain a powerful lesson that our diversity should be our greatest strength, not a source of division.”
Mbata further called on leaders at all levels to uphold courage, equity and selfless service as essential foundations for nation-building.
Ohanaeze stated that the greatest tribute Nigerians could pay the late military leaders was to build a nation where every citizen enjoys equal dignity, equal opportunity and equal protection under the law.
The organisation stressed that Nigeria’s current challenges require leadership rooted in justice, inclusion, accountability and genuine national reconciliation.
It also urged Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic or religious background, to reject hatred, violence and intolerance while embracing dialogue, peaceful coexistence and constitutional democracy.
According to Ohanaeze, the enduring legacies of Aguiyi-Ironsi and Fajuyi should continue to inspire present and future generations to place national interest above sectional interests and work collectively towards a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria.
