The Jigawa State Executive Council approves N4.17 billion for solar irrigation, flood control machinery, and organic fertilisers under its 2026 Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative.
The Jigawa State Government has formally approved a N4.17 billion capital investment dedicated to expanding irrigation infrastructure and advancing climate-resilient farming practices across the state.
The strategic funding package aims to boost year-round food production, cut operational expenses for smallholder farmers, and shield agrarian communities from severe flood-related crop destruction.
Announcing the approval in an official statement from Dutse, the Commissioner for Information, Youths, Sports and Culture, Mr. Sagir Musa, confirmed that the State Executive Council (SEC) authorized the multi-component project under the administration’s 2026 Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative. He explained that the overarching goal is to modernize rural farming operations through integrated flood mitigation systems, high-yield soil inputs, and solar-powered irrigation capabilities.
Out of the total package, N2.4 billion has been allocated for the mass procurement of bio-organic fertilizers and biological growth enhancers.
Under this expenditure, the state will acquire 30,000 sachets of Geo-Plus organic fertilizer, 20,000 sachets of Geo-Green organic fertilizer, and 100,000 liters of Topper growth liquid. Mr. Musa noted that these eco-friendly inputs will significantly lower production costs while improving soil fertility, crop yields, and general farmer profitability amidst national macroeconomic pressures.
Additionally, the council approved N1.7 billion for the procurement of 10 specialized solar-powered de-flooding and all-in-one mobile irrigation machines.
This dual-purpose machinery will service approximately 500 hectares of clustered farmlands, effectively draining excess rainwater during heavy storms to prevent crop loss while providing low-cost irrigation during the dry season.
Mr. Musa emphasized that the intervention reflects Governor Umar Namadi’s firm commitment to transforming agriculture from subsistence farming into a sustainable, technology-driven agribusiness capable of expanding rural employment and safeguarding food security.
