ADC National Chairman David Mark has described the Court of Appeal judgment overturning the party’s deregistration as a victory for democracy, constitutionalism and the rule of law in Nigeria.
ABUJA — National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Sen. David Mark, has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s judgment overturning the Federal High Court’s earlier decision directing the deregistration of the party, describing the ruling as a major victory for Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, Mark said the appellate court’s decision had restored public confidence in the nation’s judiciary and reaffirmed the constitutional rights of political parties.
The Court of Appeal nullified the judgment delivered on June 15 by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, which had ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the ADC and four other political parties for allegedly failing to meet constitutional requirements for their continued existence.
Reacting to the judgment, Mark described the appellate court’s verdict as a victory not only for the ADC but also for democracy, constitutionalism and political pluralism in Nigeria.
He said the decision demonstrated that the judiciary remains the last hope of the common man and a critical defender of democratic principles.
“The verdict is a reassuring reminder that our judiciary can still rise above pressure and protect democracy, political pluralism and the constitutional rights of citizens and political parties,” he said.
According to the former Senate President, the attempt to deregister the ADC amounted to an attack on Nigeria’s multi-party democratic system and the constitutional rights of citizens to freely participate in politics.
He commended the Court of Appeal justices for what he described as their courage, impartiality and commitment to justice, noting that the ruling had strengthened confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.
Mark urged ADC members, candidates and supporters across the country to remain united and committed to the party’s mission of providing purposeful leadership for Nigeria.
He said the legal victory should serve as fresh motivation for party faithful to intensify grassroots mobilisation and strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Our attention now returns fully to building a stronger, more united and people-oriented political platform that will offer Nigerians a credible alternative in 2027.
“We must remain steadfast, disciplined and committed to the task ahead,” he stated.
Mark reaffirmed the ADC’s commitment to democracy, the rule of law and peaceful political engagement, assuring Nigerians that the party would continue to pursue policies aimed at promoting national unity, security, prosperity and justice.
