NiMet has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday, warning of possible flash flooding in coastal states and advising residents to take safety precautions.
ABUJA — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a combination of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across Nigeria from Sunday through Tuesday, with warnings of possible flash flooding in coastal states and strong winds in areas expected to experience heavy rainfall.
According to NiMet’s latest weather outlook released in Abuja, the northern region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds on Sunday, alongside isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna states during the morning.
Later in the day, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected across parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
For the North Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are also expected in Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT.
In the southern region, moderate rainfall is expected during the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa states, with widespread rainfall forecast across the region later in the day.
On Monday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms with moderate rainfall over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba states.
By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected in Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa.
The North Central region is expected to witness morning thunderstorms in Niger, Kwara and the FCT before rainfall spreads across the region later in the day.
For southern Nigeria, light rainfall is forecast over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers during the morning, with more widespread thunderstorms and moderate rainfall expected later.
NiMet said Tuesday will begin with partly cloudy skies across northern Nigeria, with light thunderstorms likely in parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe states before moderate rainfall extends across the region later in the day.
The North Central region is expected to experience sunny intervals with patches of clouds in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall during the afternoon and evening.
Southern states will witness cloudy conditions with light rainfall over parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers before thunderstorms become more widespread later in the day.
NiMet urged residents to secure loose objects that could be displaced by strong winds often associated with thunderstorms.
The agency also warned that persistent rainfall along Nigeria’s coastal areas could trigger flash flooding, advising motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or wading through floodwaters.
Residents were further advised to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms, stay away from tall trees due to the risk of falling branches, and avoid travelling during heavy rainfall where possible.
The agency also called on airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe and effective flight planning.
NiMet encouraged members of the public to stay updated through its official weather advisories as conditions evolve.
