Education reform received a fresh push as President Bola Tinubu asked the Senate to urgently pass the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill 2026 to strengthen the governance of public senior secondary schools.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Senate to expedite the passage of the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill, 2026, aimed at strengthening the administration and governance of public senior secondary education in Nigeria.
The President’s request was contained in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Thursday’s plenary session.
In the letter, Tinubu said he was transmitting the proposed legislation to the Senate for consideration and approval.
“I am pleased to transmit to the Senate for consideration the National Senior Secondary Education Commission Amendment Bill,” the President stated.
According to him, the proposed amendment seeks to improve the administration, management and governance of public senior secondary education across the country.
Tinubu recalled that the Federal Executive Council approved the amendment bill during its meeting on April 30, 2026.
He added that the Federal Ministry of Justice subsequently gazetted and finalised the bill in accordance with constitutional provisions and established legislative drafting standards.
The President said the proposed legislation aligns with his administration’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education sector and enhancing public institutions in the national interest.
He expressed confidence that the Senate would give the bill accelerated consideration and grant it expeditious passage.
Following the presentation of the letter, Senate President Godswill Akpabio referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative action. The committee was directed to report back to the Senate within one week for further consideration.
