The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi has suffered a major defection as its deputy chairman, secretary and several members joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
EBONYI – The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a fresh political setback in Ebonyi State following the defection of its Deputy Chairman, Mr. Okechukwu Idenyi, the party’s Secretary, Mr. Solomon Adum, and several members to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The defectors formally joined the PDP during a political rally held on Saturday in Isu Community, Onicha Local Government Area, ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
They said their decision was driven by a commitment to strengthen the opposition and promote inclusive governance in Ebonyi State and across Nigeria.
Receiving the new members, the Ebonyi State Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Chukwuma Igwe, described the defections as a significant boost to the party’s growing influence in the state.
He expressed confidence that the political experience and grassroots networks of the new members would strengthen the PDP’s structure ahead of the next general elections.
“We assure the defectors of equal opportunities within the party. We urge you to work collectively with existing members to advance the party’s objectives and provide a credible alternative for the people of Ebonyi in 2027,” Igwe said.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, former NDC Secretary Mr. Solomon Adum said the decision followed extensive consultations with supporters across the state.
According to him, the move was motivated by their confidence in the PDP’s commitment to democratic governance, unity and sustainable development.
“We pledge to work with the leadership of the PDP to expand the party’s grassroots support ahead of future political activities.
“We are committed to promoting peace, internal democracy and issue-based politics,” Adum said.
Also speaking, the PDP’s House of Representatives candidate for the Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency, Mr. Felix Igboke, described the PDP as a party with a strong political foundation.
“PDP is the party that has built sustainability. The 2027 elections are the time to work together to ensure that we win.
“I welcome all the defectors to the party, and I believe we will win come 2027. Our party is a moving train,” Igboke said.
