The Nigeria Customs Service has handed over 6,981 parcels and 62 sacks of marijuana seized in Ogun State to the NDLEA, reinforcing efforts to combat drug trafficking, border crimes, and illicit trade across Nigeria.

IDIROKO, Ogun State – The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Ogun I Area Command, has handed over 6,981 parcels and 62 sacks of marijuana intercepted across various locations in Ogun State to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and prosecution.

The handover ceremony took place on Thursday at Idiroko, where the Area Comptroller of the Ogun I Area Command, Mr. Olukayode Afeni, officially transferred the seized illicit substances to the Commander of the NDLEA Idiroko Special Area Command, Mr. Olaniyi Ekundayo.

Speaking during the event, Afeni said the seizure was part of the command’s ongoing enforcement operations aimed at preventing the inflow of dangerous drugs into the country and strengthening border security.

According to him, the successful interception demonstrates the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to combating illicit trade while enhancing cooperation among security and law enforcement agencies.

“As part of our sustained enforcement operations to eliminate the influx of dangerous drugs into the country, the command is handing over a substantial quantity of illicit substances to the NDLEA.

“This handover underscores our unwavering synergy with sister agencies in the collective fight against illicit trade, preservation of national security, and effective inter-agency collaboration in securing our borders,” Afeni said.

The customs comptroller noted that the operation sends a strong warning to criminal networks involved in drug trafficking and other unlawful activities to abandon such practices.

He reiterated the command’s determination to sustain intelligence-driven operations targeted at disrupting the activities of smugglers and traffickers operating along Nigeria’s borders.

Receiving the seized marijuana, NDLEA Commander Olaniyi Ekundayo commended the strong partnership between the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service, describing inter-agency collaboration as critical to winning the fight against drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Ekundayo disclosed that cases transferred to the NDLEA are thoroughly investigated whenever actionable intelligence and credible leads are available.

“The last suspect arrested and handed over to us has led to the identification and addition of another suspect to the case.

“We are also actively tracking other individuals linked to the matter,” he said.

The NDLEA commander stressed that drug trafficking and substance abuse remain global challenges that require coordinated responses from governments, security agencies, communities, and international partners.

According to him, meaningful progress in combating illicit drugs can only be achieved through sustained collaboration, intelligence sharing, and collective commitment among stakeholders.

He reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to pursue investigations to their logical conclusion and ensure that individuals involved in drug trafficking networks are brought to justice.

The latest seizure represents one of the significant anti-smuggling operations recorded along the Ogun border corridor and highlights ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb the movement of illicit drugs into Nigeria.

Authorities say the strengthened partnership between the Customs Service and NDLEA will continue to play a crucial role in disrupting drug trafficking networks, protecting communities, and enhancing national security.
