The ADC has officially unveiled former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate, cementing a powerful southern alliance designed to challenge the incumbent administration.
The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress has officially announced the selection of the former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, running alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
In a high-impact statement released in Abuja on Monday, June 15, 2026, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, described the Atiku-Amaechi pairing as a strategic political alliance engineered to rescue the federation from its current economic and security bottlenecks.
The party revealed that Amaechi’s breakthrough emergence followed exhaustive, high-level consultations with critical party organs, coalition partners, civil society stakeholders, youth groups, and women associations drawn systematically from all six geopolitical zones across the nation.
According to Abdullahi, Amaechi secured the highly coveted nomination after finishing as the distinguished runner-up in the party’s recently concluded presidential primary election, earning robust grassroots support from across the federation.
The opposition party highly commended the former minister’s extensive public service portfolio, noting that he possesses an incredibly comprehensive and balanced record spanning both the legislative and executive arms of government.
Amaechi famously served as the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly-making him one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic-before serving two successful consecutive terms as executive governor, and later supervising the construction of Nigeria’s signature multi-billion dollar rail and maritime networks as the Minister of Transportation.
The ADC strongly maintains that this newly forged alliance represents far more than a routine electoral alignment, characterizing it as the coming together of two deeply tested, national statesmen with the widespread political leverage required to restore economic stability and national security.
The party emphasized that Amaechi’s vast, unyielding political structure within the South-South geopolitical zone and his broad popularity across Southern Nigeria will inject undeniable electoral appeal and a balanced national perspective into the joint ticket.
Presenting the pairing as a competent, credible alternative to the current administration, the ADC expressed absolute confidence that the Atiku-Amaechi flag will profoundly energize its nationwide coalition and inspire widespread public hope, while calling on the electorate to aggressively mobilize behind its campaign for absolute national transformation.
