A precision aerial campaign in the Lake Chad Basin kills senior leader Khalifa Umar, forcing fractured terrorist cells to abandon their fortified island enclaves.
Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, have significantly degraded the operational command structure of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in the North-East theatre.
In an intensive air and ground blitz, the combined forces neutralized more than 50 frontline insurgents, including a highly revered top commander. The major security breakthrough was confirmed via an official military field report made available to journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, June 3, 2026.
According to defense authorities, the cornerstone of the successful offensive was a high-intelligence precision airstrike conducted around the volatile Kirta and Arina Ciki axes within the Lake Chad region.
The aerial bombardments successfully hit an executive convergence of insurgent leaders, instantly killing several high-value targets. Among the dead was Khalifa Umar, a prominent and influential member of the ISWAP Shura Council—the group’s supreme decision-making and operational planning organ.
The military report noted that the impact of the sustained air offensive has severely destabilized the insurgents’ tactical footprint, creating panic within their ranks.
Under intense pressure from the ongoing campaign, the remnants of the terrorist cells have been forced to abandon their historically fortified island enclaves, fleeing toward mainland communities where they are increasingly vulnerable to ground sweep operations.
“The major success followed a precision airstrike around Kirta and Arina Ciki, which killed several terrorist commanders, including Khalifa Umar, a member of the ISWAP Shura Council. The sustained air offensive has forced insurgents to abandon island enclaves and move towards the mainland under pressure,” the official operational communique detailed.
Simultaneously, ground intelligence operatives in Borno State successfully dismantled a localized support network feeding the frontlines.
During separate targeted operations inside the capital city of Maiduguri and its surrounding communities, troops apprehended three suspected ISWAP logistics suppliers and tracking informants.
Additionally, the raid led to the arrest of a rogue deserter soldier who had absconded from his duty post with his service weapon and was later linked to cross-border criminal networks.
Items recovered from the logistical suppliers included a high-caliber rifle with loaded magazines, an operational transport vehicle, 30 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) meant for insurgent motorcycles, and varied communication materials.
Meanwhile, fighting patrols along the Kukawa axis successfully engaged fleeing terrorist scouts, recovering additional abandoned ammunition.
Reaffirming their commitment to the campaign, military authorities emphasized that they will sustain the combination of advanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) tools with kinetic power until total normalcy is restored across the border corridors.
