Leveraging advanced intelligence and digital tracking, the Lagos State Police Command arrests a runaway 57-year-old driver who fled to Oyo State with his boss’s bus.
The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 57-year-old commercial driver who allegedly stole a Toyota Hiace Space Bus belonging to his employer and fled to neighboring Oyo State.
The breakthrough was disclosed on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Tijani, while addressing journalists on recent operational breakthroughs at the command headquarters in Ikeja.
Tijani revealed that the suspect was intercepted by detectives on Sunday at approximately 5:30 a.m. following days of relentless electronic tracking and intelligence-led surveillance.
According to preliminary police reports, the suspect took advantage of his position as a trusted employee to abscond with the high-value commercial vehicle.
Hoping to permanently evade law enforcement, he drove the bus straight to Ibadan, where he immediately falsified the vehicle’s registration papers and changed his mobile phone number to cut off all communication with his employer.
However, the driver’s evasion tactics proved futile. Immediately after the vehicle’s owner reported the incident, the command’s tactical teams launched a swift counter-operation.
Through a well-coordinated digital tracking dragnet, detectives successfully geolocated the suspect’s exact hideout in Ibadan, arresting him and recovering the stolen vehicle intact before it could be sold on the black market.
The Commissioner confirmed that the suspect has confessed to the crime under interrogation. Tijani noted that while syndicates frequently alter vehicle identities and cross state lines to frustrate investigations, the command possesses the technological capabilities to track down offenders across geopolitical boundaries.
Assuring the public of the police force’s commitment to protecting investments, life, and property, the CP stated that the suspect will be formally arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as case files are completed.
