A tragic lone accident on the Eruku bridge has claimed the lives of 11 people after their vehicle somersaulted and plunged into the depths, with the FRSC citing overloading and suspected intoxication as key factors.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, has confirmed the death of 11 persons following a horrific lone accident on the Eruku bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway. The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, involved a gold-colored Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE 722 KJ.

According to a statement released on Monday by the command’s Public Education Officer, Mr. Odunsi Afolabi, on behalf of Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, the vehicle was traveling at night when it somersaulted and plunged off the bridge. The impact trapped all occupants inside the wreckage as the doors reportedly became jammed, making immediate escape impossible.

Personnel from the Itori Unit Command of the FRSC were dispatched to the scene for emergency rescue operations. Supported by members of the local community, the team had to dismantle the mangled vehicle to recover the bodies of the victims.

The Sector Commander confirmed that all 11 occupants – comprising 10 adult males and one adult female – perished in the crash. Their remains have since been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

Preliminary investigations by the FRSC attribute the fatal accident to:

  • Driving Under the Influence: Suspected intoxication of the driver.
  • Overloading: The vehicle was carrying a capacity beyond its safety limit.

Commander Ogunjobi urged motorists, particularly those plying the Abeokuta-Lagos route, to exercise extreme caution and avoid the risks associated with night journeys. He expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and reminded the public that adherence to road safety regulations is the only way to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
