The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has officially endorsed UNN Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simon Ortuanya, praising his integrity and aggressive infrastructure reforms following a fact-finding solidarity visit.
NSUKKA – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has passed a resounding vote of confidence on the Vice-Chancellor of the university of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya. The student body described the academic leader as a figure of proven integrity and administrative competence.
During a solidarity visit by NANS Zone F (South-East) leadership on Tuesday, student representatives praised the Vice-Chancellor’s student-friendly policies and his proactive approach to institutional challenges.
A major highlight of the visit was the debunking of a viral social media report alleging that a visually impaired student had been evicted from a university hostel. NANS Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, revealed that an independent investigation proved the claims were entirely false.
“We have been following events in the university and can confidently affirm that the Vice-Chancellor has demonstrated strong leadership,” Obi stated, shifting the conversation toward constructive dialogue regarding student welfare.
Responding to student concerns about aging facilities, Prof. Ortuanya detailed an extensive renovation and construction roadmap currently underway at the university. Key highlights include:
- Hostel Renovations: Contracts have been awarded for the Eni-Njoku, Eyo-Ita, Balewa, and Nkrumah hostels.
- Â Medical College Expansion: Four new hostel blocks are under construction for Pharmaceutical, Clinical, and Nursing Sciences.
- Â Road Network: Completion of 4.5 kilometres of internal link roads on the Nsukka campus.
-  Public-Private Partnerships: Plans to renovate the iconic Zik’s Flats and develop new housing through PPP models.
Prof. Ortuanya, a former Speaker of the Students’ Parliament, emphasized his administration’s commitment to protecting student interests. He noted the introduction of eight new policies, including a landmark disability policy designed to protect vulnerable members of the university community.
Addressing the current ban on campus nightlife, the Vice-Chancellor assured students that the management is reviewing the security situation. He hinted at a potential lifting of the ban once safety protocols are fully optimized.
“Give us the next one year to consolidate these gains and turn things around,” Prof. Ortuanya appealed, urging the university community to take responsibility for maintaining the newly upgraded facilities.
