Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu has achieved a landmark certification from Nigeria’s aviation regulator, marking a major leap toward global standards and positioning the airport for international expansion.

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has granted Aerodrome Certification to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, marking its first-ever recognition under international aviation standards.

The certificate was presented to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria at the regulator’s headquarters in Abuja following full compliance with both national and global safety requirements.

Director-General of NCAA, Chris Najomo, described the certification as a significant milestone aligned with the strict benchmarks of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

Represented by Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, Ahmad Abba, Najomo said the approval followed a rigorous five-phase evaluation covering infrastructure integrity, operational systems, safety management, emergency readiness, and personnel training.

“The certification demonstrates that Nigeria is steadily meeting international aviation safety standards,” he said, noting that the process reflected strong collaboration between regulators and operators.

On behalf of FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, described the development as a major win for Nigeria’s aviation sector.

She credited the successful outcome to coordinated efforts among NCAA officials, FAAN technical teams, and industry stakeholders, adding that the authority would continue to prioritize compliance, infrastructure upgrades, and improved passenger experience.

“This certification marks the beginning of a new phase of continuous improvement across our airports,” she stated.

Reacting, Enugu State Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, said the milestone aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s economic vision to transform the state into a major aviation hub.

He noted that the certification would enhance the airport’s credibility among international airlines and aviation bodies, positioning it to attract new routes and increased traffic.

An Aerodrome Certificate is a mandatory licence confirming that an airport meets all safety, operational, and infrastructure standards required to handle aircraft and passengers under international aviation law, as defined by ICAO Annex 14.

Industry observers say the development signals a “new dawn” for the Enugu airport, which has undergone significant upgrades in recent weeks. Improvements include enhanced security systems, perimeter fencing, upgraded signage, and additional firefighting capabilities.

With the certification now secured, the airport is expected to accelerate commercial expansion under its concession arrangement, with projections to handle increased international traffic, including wide-body aircraft operations such as the Boeing 747.

The milestone positions Akanu Ibiam International Airport as a growing aviation gateway in southeastern Nigeria, with renewed prospects for global connectivity and economic growth.
