Iran witnesses mass prayers in Tehran for slain supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as uncertainty deepens and regional tensions escalate following his death in an Israeli airstrike.

Thousands of mourners gathered in Tehran on Friday for prayers to honour Iran’s slain supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whose death in an Israeli airstrike has plunged the country into uncertainty and grief.

State television footage showed vast crowds assembled at the mausoleum of revolutionary founder Ruhollah Khomeini, where the ceremony was led by cleric Mohammad-Javad Haj Ali Akbari.

The gathering marked the culmination of the 40-day mourning period observed in Shia Islam, which began shortly after Khamenei’s death on February 28.

Despite the large-scale ceremonies, key issues surrounding the late leader’s burial remain unresolved. Authorities have yet to confirm a final burial date, although official plans indicate that Khamenei will be laid to rest in Mashhad, his birthplace in northeastern Iran.

Meanwhile, his son and designated successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has not appeared publicly since assuming leadership in early March, further fuelling speculation amid rising tensions.

The developments come as Iran navigates a sensitive transition period, with observers closely watching how the leadership change may shape domestic stability and regional dynamics.
