MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited confirmed the tragic electrocution of a linesman in Enugu, revealing preliminary findings that suggest the incident occurred during an unauthorized activity at a distribution substation.
MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has confirmed the electrocution of one of its staff, Mr. Issac Dike, a linesman attached to the company’s Ogui District in Enugu.
The Head of Communications at MEDL, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday, noting that the incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at about 3:25 p.m.
According to the statement, the electrocution happened while the deceased was carrying out a yet-to-be-established activity within a 300KVA/11KV/0.415KV distribution substation located on Giraffe Street, Ekulu East Estate, also known as Zoo Estate, Enugu.
Ezeh said the company would conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary findings, however, revealed that the deceased visited the location with a driver assigned to his team, who reportedly stated that he was unaware of the specific work activity that took them to the estate or the identity of the customer who allegedly requested the service.

Further checks indicated that the linesman did not inform any member of his team about his movement to Ekulu East Estate for any work-related assignment.
The company also noted that checks on its fault report log and Complaint Management System (CMS) showed no record of any complaint from customers in the estate prior to the incident.
Additionally, there was no approved outage request for work to be carried out in the area on the day of the electrocution, suggesting the activity may have been unauthorized.
“It is unfortunate that we lost him under such circumstances. Our hearts go out to his family, and we pray for the repose of his soul,” Ezeh stated.
Following the incident, the lifeless body of the staff was brought down from the high-tension pole and taken to the Emergency Unit of the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Colliery, Enugu, where he was confirmed dead.
The incident was subsequently reported at the Abakaliki Road Police Station, Enugu, while his remains were later deposited at the morgue.
