The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party has constituted a reconciliation committee to address the party’s leadership crisis following a Court of Appeal judgment that invalidated its 2025 national convention.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has constituted a special committee to interface with the party’s legal team and key stakeholders in a bid to resolve the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
This was disclosed in a communiqué issued on Wednesday in Abuja at the end of the board’s two-day expanded emergency meeting presided over by its Chairman, Adolphus Wabara.
According to the communiqué, the committee will address issues arising from the Court of Appeal judgment delivered on March 9, 2026, which invalidated the party’s November 2025 National Convention that produced the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).
The BoT said the committee would also help facilitate reconciliation among aggrieved stakeholders to ensure the party remains positioned to field candidates in upcoming elections.
While expressing disagreement with the appellate court’s ruling, the board said it was awaiting formal legal advice from the party’s lawyers on the next steps.
The communiqué expressed concern over internal disputes and litigations within the party, describing them as avoidable and damaging to the unity of Nigeria’s main opposition party.
“The board acknowledges and resolves to explore the window provided by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, for reconciliation within the party,” the statement said.
It added that the board was mindful of the aspirations of party members intending to contest various positions in the 2027 general elections.
“As the conscience and third-highest leadership organ of the party, the board is resolved to take immediate steps to reconcile all stakeholders, end all disputes, and restore the party to good political health,” the communiqué stated.
The BoT also acknowledged what it described as strong loyalty from Nigerians toward the party, citing reports from the ongoing nationwide e-registration exercise.
According to the board, field reports indicate a steady surge in membership registrations across the country.
“The unprecedented surge to our party, in spite of the challenges, underscores the standing of the PDP as the party of choice for the majority of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” the communiqué added.
The board further announced the appointment of Babangida Aliyu as Secretary of the Board, in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
It also commended Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, for their commitment to the party’s stability.
The BoT urged party leaders and members to set aside personal and group interests and unite in the overall interest of the party.
It also called on Nigerians to remain hopeful, assuring that the PDP was working to reposition itself to “rescue the nation.”
