Governor Hope Uzodimma has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State to uphold equity and harmony to ensure stability and fair representation within the party.
Uzodimma made the appeal on Tuesday during the party’s state congress held in Owerri, where new state executives were elected.
Mr Austin Onyedebelu emerged as state chairman, while Mr Onyekachi Ibezim was elected secretary. They were affirmed alongside other executive members through consensus and formal balloting.
Addressing party faithful, the governor said he deliberately declined to support the re-election of the outgoing executive in order to promote what he described as a “unity list.”
According to him, the consensus arrangement was designed to balance interests and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
“We agreed during our last meeting to be united and to produce a unity list,” Uzodimma said, stressing that adherence to the party constitution and a “charter of equity” remained crucial for political balance.
He noted that all aspirants endorsed the decision to avoid internal friction.
The outgoing chairman, Dr Macdonald Ebere, commended the governor’s leadership and discipline, stating that the party expanded significantly across the state’s 27 local government areas during his four-year tenure.
The congress was supervised by committee chairman Mr Godwin Anaughe and concluded with the dissolution of the previous executive, following a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Amarachi Iwuanyanwu.
Anaughe praised the governor’s infrastructural achievements, citing projects such as the Orashi Power Plant and the Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu International Conference Centre, and said the committee would submit its report to the party’s National Working Committee.
In his acceptance speech, Onyedebelu thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to promote unity while advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda in the state.
