Dr. Martin Chukwunwike has been elected Chairman of the APC in Enugu State following the party’s State Congress, marking the end of the caretaker committee led by Barr. Ben Nwoye.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has elected Dr. Martin Chukwunwike as its new State Chairman, marking the conclusion of the party’s State Congress and the formal transition from a caretaker leadership to a substantive executive structure.

Dr. Chukwunwike previously served as State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before the political realignment that saw the Enugu State Governor, members of the State Executive Council, and the former PDP structure in the state collapse into the APC. He also served as Commissioner for Health during the administration of former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.

His emergence signals a consolidation of the new political order within the APC in Enugu State, following months of reconciliation and integration efforts across party lines.

Caretaker Committee Hands Over United Structure

In his valedictory address at the State Congress, the Caretaker Committee Chairman, Barr. Ben Nwoye, described the event as the completion of a journey that began with uncertainty but ended in unity.

According to him, the Caretaker Committee was constituted with a clear mandate: to reconcile aggrieved factions, rebuild trust among stakeholders, harmonise competing interests, and reposition the party for electoral success.

He noted that the committee inherited a fragmented structure with splinter groups and internal grievances but prioritised dialogue and inclusion to stabilise the party. He said all factions had been successfully integrated into a unified structure ahead of the congress.

Nwoye emphasised that members who joined the APC from the PDP were not treated as outsiders but were accommodated within the party framework, a move he said strengthened internal cohesion.

Acknowledgment of Key Stakeholders

The outgoing chairman attributed the smooth reconciliation process to the support of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, describing his leadership as instrumental in stabilising the party and guiding the transition process.

He also commended the Enugu State Commissioner for Science and Innovation, Prince Lawrence Ezeh, for logistical support provided to the caretaker committee during its tenure.

Further appreciation was extended to the 17 Local Government Chairmen for mobilising members during the party’s e-registration exercise, as well as to the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Barr. Victor Udeh, and the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, for their institutional support.

Structured Emergence of Over 6,000 Executives

Nwoye disclosed that more than 6,000 party executives had emerged through a structured process beginning at the ward level, progressing through local governments and districts, culminating in the State Congress that produced the new state leadership.

He described the congress as the “final layer” of a pyramid built through months of coordination and internal reorganisation.

Focus on Electoral Success

With the election of Dr. Chukwunwike as State Chairman, the APC in Enugu signalled its readiness for upcoming electoral contests, including efforts to secure re-election for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mbah.

As he formally stepped down, Nwoye expressed confidence in the newly elected executives, urging them to sustain unity within the party and consolidate the gains achieved during the caretaker period.

The State Congress concludes a significant phase in the APC’s restructuring process in Enugu, positioning the party for what its leaders describe as a renewed drive for political dominance in the state.
