Germany has ruled out taking part in the ongoing U.S.–Israeli military offensive against Iran, as tensions continue to escalate across the Middle East.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Monday that Berlin has no plans to join the military operation launched by the United States and Israel.

“The German government has no intention of participating,” Wadephul told Deutschlandfunk, two days after the large-scale offensive began.

He explained that, unlike the United Kingdom, which has allowed U.S. forces to use its regional bases, Germany does not have comparable military infrastructure in the region.

According to him, Germany also lacks the required military resources to support the operation.

“From the German perspective, there will be no further measures beyond that,” he said.

Wadephul added that German troops currently deployed in Jordan and Iraq would act only in self-defence if attacked.

The minister admitted there were doubts about whether the assault on Iran complies with international law, but argued that Tehran remains a major security concern for Israel, Europe and the wider region.

He cited Iran’s ballistic missile programme, alleged cyber attacks, and its reported support for Russia’s war in Ukraine as reasons for continued international concern.
