Iran has entered a transition period following the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with a three-member council set to oversee the country until a new leader is appointed.
Iranian state media reported on Sunday that the temporary leadership council is made up of President Masoud Pezeshkian, judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a representative of the Guardian Council.
The trio will manage state affairs during the interim period while the Assembly of Experts, a powerful panel of 88 clerics, begins the process of selecting a new Supreme Leader.
Under Iranian law, the Assembly of Experts is responsible for appointing the country’s highest authority and is expected to act as quickly as possible to ensure political stability.
Khamenei was reported killed on Saturday during large-scale strikes on Iranian targets carried out by the United States and Israel, an attack that has sharply increased tensions across the Middle East.
Officials have not indicated who is likely to succeed him, and analysts say the selection of the next Supreme Leader could shape Iran’s political direction for decades.
