President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appealed to the leadership of the 10th Senate to amend the Constitution to create a legal framework for the establishment of State Police as part of efforts to address insecurity nationwide.
Tinubu made the appeal on Wednesday during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The President said the creation of State Police had become urgent in view of Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, stressing that decentralised policing would strengthen grassroots law enforcement and enable states to respond swiftly to threats within their jurisdictions.
According to him, a State Police structure would complement existing federal security architecture and promote intelligence-driven, community-focused policing.
“We are facing terrorism, banditry and insurgency. What I will ask for tonight is for you to start thinking how best to amend the Constitution to incorporate the State Police for us to secure our country, take over our forests from marauders and free our children from fear,” he said.
Tinubu commended the cordial working relationship between the executive and the Senate, noting that unity among political leaders was critical to defeating terrorism and banditry.
He also thanked lawmakers for supporting his administration’s economic reforms, particularly the fuel subsidy removal and tax reform policies, describing them as bold decisions made in the national interest.
“What we stopped was monumental corruption in the subsidy system. We don’t want to participate in corruption and foreign exchange arbitrage. What we are enjoying today is a more stable economy, and prosperity is beckoning,” he added.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended Tinubu for hosting the Senate leadership and praised what he described as the President’s visionary leadership at a critical time for the nation.
Akpabio said the administration’s reforms had increased revenue available to sub-national governments for infrastructure and development, and he offered prayers for national peace, stability and prosperity.
